Corps Members under Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa state on Thursday sensitized young girls on menstrual hygiene.
Newsline NG learnt that the sensitization Programme which was held at three schools in Kolokuma-Opokuma LGA saw over 350 sanitary pads distributed to young girls.
Some of the visited schools included ; Kaiama Grammar School, Government girls college Kaiama and Ebindu international School
Speaking at Sensitization Programme, the Project leader, Olutoye Bibiyemi commended the students to trooping out en masse for the programme.
Bibiyemi while reeling the essence of the sensitization Programme said the programme is to break the silence on menstruation by sensitizing the girls on menstruation and menstrual hygiene and also increase the proportion of young girls who are engaging in sustainable, environmental friendly and proper menstruation hygiene management through the use of safe, hygienic sanitary pads by the end of the project.
She said", According to Statistics, 44 percent of women and girls in Nigerian are experiencing period poverty because they cannot afford sanitary pads.
"Nobody deserves the indignity of having to use cloths pieces, old mattress cuttings or tissue to catch her menstrual flow. These materials are unhygienic and uncomfortable in catching menstrual flow.
"Menstrual hygiene is an essential yet often overlooked aspect of the well-being and dignity of adolescent girls and women. In many parts of the world, a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and a general lack of awareness surrounding menstruation continue to pose significant challenges.
"In response to this critical issue, I came up with this initiative to distribute sanitary pads to young girls in Kolokuma- Opokuma LGA, Bayelsa State and also sensitize them on menstrual hygiene. That is what I am doing.
"My vision for this project is to impact the lives of young girls and also contribute to their well-being in the little way I can and I'm happy I was able to pull that through despite the odds.
"When I started sourcing for funds I thought I won't be able to pull this through at some point when I wasn't getting enough donations or supports from people but I want to thank God for making this project a success.
"So far we have been able to distribute 350 pads to young girls and we are still going to do more because the target of this project is to distribute to 1000 young girls in Bayelsa.
"We are still taking more donations and support from people until we reach our target and as they come, we'll extend our distribution to many more young girls.
She however appreciated her fellow corps members who worked with her as a team in executing this project.
" I want to appreciate Tope Onigbinde Ezekiel, Olusola Simeon amoo, Adegbayibi Adeola Dorcas, and those that showed interest in this project by supporting the project with donations and sharing the news about this project.
Some of the beneficiaries while speaking with our correspondent however thanked the corps members for the initiatives.
