A former Ondo South Senatorial District Senator, Nicholas Tofowomo, has hailed the nomination of Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim as a non-career ambassador by President Bola Tinubu.
The president had, on Nov. 28, announced Ibrahim as one of the 17 non-career ambassador-nominees and 15 career ambassador-nominees for confirmation by the National Assembly.
Tofowomo, a chieftain of African Democratic Congress (ADC), told journalists on Tuesday that Ibrahim, currently representing Ondo South in the national assembly, would perform better as ambassador than senator.
He claimed that since Ibrahim’s emergence as senator two years ago, he had been moving around the globe, involving himself in international engagements rather than focusing on senatorial issues.
While congratulating Ibrahim, the ADC chieftain said that his nomination was a great blessing to Ondo South senatorial district and the state at large.
According to him, the senator possesses the intellectual acumen and educational qualifications to represent Nigeria at international fora rather than the senatorial district.
“Ibrahim just got the right job as an ambassador. If he is confirmed, I think he has all it takes to perform better in international engagements rather than the senatorial district.
“I congratulate him because his nomination is a great blessing to Ondo South and the state at large.
“Ondo South constituents have not enjoyed him since he became a senator because he has been busy junketing around the world with international engagements rather than him focussing on senatorial issues.
“His All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders too have been having issues with him over inaccessibility at party meetings and constituency political deliberations,” he said.
NAN reports that Ondo South senatorial district is made up of six local government areas, namely: Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Odigbo and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo.
Tofowomo, however, claimed that he had not seen Ibrahim in Ilaje, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo and Odigbo council areas since he became senator in 2023.
He said that the senator’s exit from the national assembly would open doors for other competent politicians within the senatorial district to contest, with one of them filling the vacancy.
The former senator urged the people of the senatorial district to choose wisely and elect the best among the array of competent politicians, with credibility and capacity to represent them well for better delivery of dividends of democracy.
“Ondo South constituents must elect a capable politician, preferably a ranking senator, who has been at the senate and had initiated bills that brought better dividends of democracy to them.
“We have been there; we have all it takes to represent our people well. There are testimonies of great performances and dividends of democracy that we brought to our constituents,” the former senator said.
Some prominent politicians like Tofowomo, Morayo Labi, former APC senatorial aspirant; Mayowa Akinfolarin, a former House of Representatives member and Mathew Oyerinmade, popularly known as MATO, have shown interest in taking over Ibrahim’s seat.
