Panic as Cultist kill Rugipo Student

A student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, identified only as Peter, was killed by suspected cult members in the Opomulero community of Owo, Ondo State, on Sunday evening, sparking fear across the academic community.

The attack, which took place at Peter’s residence, has left fellow students and staff anxious about safety in the area.

According to a community source who asked to remain anonymous, the assailants entered Opomulero while hunting for rival cult members.

“They traced Peter to his house, called him out of his apartment pretending to be visitors, and opened fire on him at point‑blank range.

“We received a call yesterday evening that Peter was shot by some guys believed to be cultists. He struggled to stay alive before he was rushed to the hospital.”the source said.

Another resident, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Peter had been grieving the recent loss of his mother. “Peter was still mourning the death of his mother, who passed away three weeks ago, when this unfortunate incident occurred,” the source disclosed.

The incident has heightened concerns among students and faculty at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic. Attempts to reach the institution’s management for comment were unsuccessful, as officials did not respond to inquiries.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi Kazeem, said a manhunt was launched for the attackers, leading to the arrest of one suspect, who is currently in custody and has made useful statements.

He added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects still at large.

Another source disclosed that the deceased was still mourning the death of his mother, who reportedly died about three weeks before the incident.

Commending the operatives for their swift response, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that security measures had been strengthened across the state
