The Edo Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old, Obehi Odine, for staging her own kidnapping and demanding a ₦10 million ransom.
Eleven others were also arrested for their alleged involvement in a kidnapping syndicate in a separate operation.
According to the police, Odine confessed to fabricating the kidnapping to extort money. In a statement, the command's spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said exhibits, including firearms, were recovered during the operations.
In a related operation in Ubiaja, the police, in collaboration with the Nigerian Military and Edo State Security Corps, arrested 11 suspects believed to be part of a kidnapping syndicate.
The operation led to the recovery of 24 dane guns, 17 cutlasses, three battle axes, and other items.
Edo Police Commissioner, Monday Agbonika, warned the public against making false kidnapping reports, saying it wastes security resources and undermines public confidence. "Anyone caught will be prosecuted accordingly," he said.
This comes after gunmen demanded ₦100 million for the release of eight Imoga indigenes abducted on Friday night.
The Okpahi of Imoga Kingdom, Oba Patrick Obajoye, said the victims were kidnapped at Star Boy Hotel on Imoga-Ibillo Road.
