The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, has called for renewed commitment to sports development in the state, while expressing concerns over issues affecting athletes, administrators and infrastructure.
This was part of resolutions reached at the end of the association’s meeting held in Akure on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The meeting was presided over by the State Chairman, Segun Giwa.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the congress signed by Adewale Momoh, Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee; Akintunde Jacob, Secretary; and Adebayo Familoyo, Member, members congratulated the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the people of the state on the successful celebration of the 50th anniversary of the creation of Ondo State. The association described the golden jubilee as a milestone worthy of commendation.
However, the body expressed displeasure over what it described as the omission of notable sports icons who have represented and brought honour to Ondo State over the past five decades. SWAN maintained that individuals who have distinguished themselves in various sporting disciplines deserved recognition during the anniversary celebration.
To address this perceived oversight, the association announced plans to organise a special event aimed at celebrating outstanding Ondo State indigenes who have excelled in sports. The proposed programme, according to the communiqué, will be held in collaboration with relevant sporting associations and federations within and outside the state.
The congress also urged sports stakeholders across the state to work harmoniously to engender meaningful sports development. Particular reference was made to football administration, where the association observed alleged lack of synergy between the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) — the parent body of Sunshine Stars F.C. and Sunshine Queens F.C. — and other relevant football associations.
SWAN described as “preposterous” the reported decision by the management of ODSFA to reduce the salaries of players and officials ahead of the second stanza of the league season, allegedly without providing adequate explanation.
The association noted that such actions could negatively affect team morale and performance at a critical stage of competition.
Furthermore, the congress expressed serious concern over the absence of a befitting stadium in the state capable of hosting major national sporting events. It lamented that this infrastructural deficit has continued to deprive Ondo State of economic opportunities that accompany the hosting of high-profile competitions.
SWAN reiterated its commitment to advocating policies and initiatives that will promote sports development and protect the interests of athletes and stakeholders in Ondo State.
