Popular Nollywood actress and media personality, Biola Adebayo, has issued a public apology following widespread backlash over her recent interview with embattled actor Baba Ijesha.
The controversy erupted after Adebayo featured Baba Ijesha on her podcast, a move that sparked outrage among many Nigerians who felt the platform should not have been extended to the actor given his past legal troubles.
Newsline NG observed that Critics took to social media to express disappointment, with some calling for the immediate removal of the interview.
In her response, Adebayo explained that her intention was not to endorse or support Baba Ijesha, but rather to provide him with an opportunity to apologise publicly and possibly begin rebuilding his career.
She referenced a previous instance where she hosted Seun Egbegbe, noting that many Nigerians had embraced him after his appearance on her platform.
According to Adebayo, she underestimated the level of public resentment toward Baba Ijesha. She admitted that she was unaware of the depth of anger many Nigerians still harboured, which ultimately fueled the backlash against her decision to host him.
The actress also emphasised her role as an interviewer, stating that providing a platform for individuals to share their stories does not equate to endorsing their actions.
She suggested that many critics may not have watched the full interview before forming opinions.
Adebayo further highlighted her personal connection to Baba Ijesha, describing him as a senior colleague in the movie industry and someone she once admired during her early days in Nollywood. This, she said, influenced her decision to engage him in a conversation.
Despite her explanations, Adebayo acknowledged the hurt and offence caused by the interview. She expressed deep regret, offering a heartfelt apology to those who felt disappointed or offended by her actions.
She also suggested that the reaction might have been influenced by the visibility of her platform, noting that similar interviews conducted elsewhere might not have attracted such intense scrutiny or demands for removal.
Reiterating her remorse, Adebayo apologized once again for featuring Baba Ijesha, assuring the public that she takes full responsibility for the controversy and the reactions that followed.
