For over 17 years, darkness has reigned supreme in my country home - Mahintedo in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, while residents were often clamouring for reliable electricity.
Earlier than now in my community, streets would fall silent after sunset, businesses struggled to operate beyond daylight hours, and households depended on costly and hazardous alternatives such as kerosene lamps, kindle light and small generators, generally called 'I better pass my neighbours'.
Today, however, the story of Mahintedo, my country home is changing-thanks to the transformative intervention of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under the leadership of Chief Samuel Ogbuku as MD and Hon. Otito Atikase as the Honourable Commissioner representing Ondo State.
Through a carefully implemented solar electrification project, the once-dark community has been illuminated. Solar-powered systems have been installed across the nooks and crannies of Mahintedo, bringing sustainable energy to homes, streets, and public spaces. The project is not only lighting up the environment but also igniting renewed hope among residents.
The solar initiative represents more than just electricity, it symbolizes development, inclusion, and the recognition of communities that have long felt overlooked, Marginalised and abandoned.
Before the execution of the project, daily life in Mahintedo revolved around the limitations imposed by the absence of reliable power. Students struggled to study at night, local traders closed their shops early, and community activities were constrained by darkness but with the installation of solar-powered lighting and energy systems, the situation has dramatically improved.
Streets are now safely illuminated after sunset, children can study comfortably in the evenings, and small businesses are beginning to extend their operating hours.
The solar initiative reflects the broader commitment of the Niger Delta Development Commission to sustainable development across the Niger Delta region. By investing in renewable energy, the Commission is addressing both infrastructural deficits and environmental concerns.
Unlike conventional electricity projects that often face delays due to grid expansion challenges, solar power offers a practical and immediate solution. The systems installed in Mahintedo operate independently of unstable national power supply, ensuring consistent energy access for residents.
For many in the community, this means freedom from the constant noise and fuel expenses associated with generators. It also reduces pollution and improves overall quality of life.
On this laudable achievements, I extend my profound gratitude and deep appreciation for the leadership of Chief Samuel Ogbuku and the holistic contributions of Hon. Otito Atikase, whose roles were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.
The NDDC's commitment to grassroots development has been widely acknowledged as a sign that impactful governance can reach even the most remote communities when leadership prioritizes people-centered initiatives.
The illumination of Mahintedo community stands as a powerful reminder that access to energy is more than a convenience, it is a catalyst for progress. Reliable power opens doors to education, economic activity, improved security, and social interaction.
As solar lights now glow across the streets and homes of the community, residents see not just brightness but possibility. The once-familiar darkness has given way to a new chapter of lightning.
For Mahintedo my country home, the lights now shining across its landscape, which represents hope, growth, and the promise of a brighter future to usher in other laudable projects such as road networks, portable water supply, modern town hall and market.
