Worshippers abducted from a Celestial Church in Uso community, in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, have regained their freedom after their families reportedly paid a ransom to secure their release.
The victims were said to have been freed on Monday evening at Ilado community following the payment of ₦9 million to their abductors. Their release brought relief to relatives and residents who had been engulfed in fear and uncertainty since news of the abduction broke.
Sources close to the affected families disclosed that the worshippers spent several days in captivity before negotiations led to their eventual freedom.
According to the sources, the kidnappers had initially demanded a much higher ransom but later agreed to the ₦9 million settlement after prolonged discussions.
The development comes amid earlier controversy surrounding claims by the Ondo State Police Command that some suspects had been arrested and one of the victims rescued. Families of the abducted worshippers had publicly disputed the claim at the time, maintaining that all the victims were still being held.
As of the time of filing this report, the police command had yet to issue an official statement confirming the release of the victims or providing details on the circumstances surrounding the ransom payment.
Meanwhile, residents of Uso community have expressed gratitude over the safe return of the worshippers, while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle kidnapping and enhance safety, particularly around religious centres.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns about insecurity in parts of the state, as well as the heavy financial and emotional toll on families compelled to negotiate with criminals for the freedom of their loved ones.
