A heavy rainstorm accompanied by strong winds on Monday evening caused widespread damage at Edo State Polytechnic in Usen, Edo State, leaving several structures within the institution badly affected.
Eyewitnesses said the rain began around 6 p.m, but the situation quickly worsened as powerful winds swept through the community and the polytechnic campus, destroying property and creating panic among residents and students.
Our correspondent gathered that one of the buildings located immediately after the institution’s main security gate had its roof completely blown off by the wind.
The incident reportedly occurred within minutes of the storm, leaving parts of the structure exposed to the rain, the Physics Laboratory of the institution was also badly affected during the storm.
According to sources, the heavy wind forcefully removed the roof of the laboratory and scattered the roofing sheets across different parts of the campus and surrounding areas.
Residents living around the school expressed concern over the incident, noting that the flying roofing sheets posed serious danger to people in the vicinity at the time of the storm.
Further findings revealed that the windstorm also damaged the signboard bearing the name of the institution at the entrance gate, as it was forcefully pulled down during the heavy wind.
Apart from the destruction recorded within the polytechnic premises, several electrical wires in the Usen community were also affected by the storm, causing disruption to electricity supply in the area.
The damage to the power lines has reportedly plunged the entire community into darkness, with residents calling on relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore electricity.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualty had been reported.
