As Christians celebrate Good Friday and Easter, the Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan, His Grace, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin, has urged Nigerian youths, to hold on to hope amidst life’s challenges.
Abegunrin made the assertion on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Ibadan.
The Catholic Archbishop appealed to the youth to never give in to despair, in spite of all odds.
“Keep hope alive. Stay close to God, stay close to your Church, and it shall be well.
“Arise and make your mark: this is the time for you to rise and make your presence felt in the world and in the Church, bring life to the Church with your energy and zeal for God; become ambassadors of Jesus,” he said.
Acknowledging the difficulties facing youths, Abegunrin said: “Education is no longer cheap, even after graduation, work is scarce and when you get work, the salary is not enough.”
The Cleric however, cautioned them against negative coping mechanisms.
“These harsh realities should not lead you to bad habits, Nigeria is the land of opportunities and Easter is the good news that new life is possible, if we live for God.
“Prioritise your faith: do not be too busy as to abandon God, because it is God alone that can give your life meaning.
“With your education and skills, you can make Nigeria great again,” the Catholic Archbishop urges youths.
The cleric also called on Nigerian leaders to act, ensure safety, freedom of movement and credible elections.
He warned that Security apparatus should not be used for nefarious purposes, especially to intimidate opponents or voters.
Abegunrin emphasised the need for tangible action: “We wish to see government’s actions, not just pronouncements; let peace reign in our land.”
“There is much concern on security, we call on our governments, Federal and States, Oyo State that is dear to us, to bring an end to these killings, destruction and displacement of people from their homes.
“Security apparatus must be employed to uproot banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence preventing people from living normal life.
“We too should not just cry and fold our hands, let’s plan how to support ourselves and be liberated; God help us,” he said.
Inspiring charity, Abegunrin urged Nigerians to be one another’s keeper and live in peace and unity.
“As Christ has made today good for us, it’s our obligation to also make it good for others.
“Help people overcome their pains and hardship; let us make life good for our neighbour.
“It doesn’t just have to be Friday that is Good Friday, let it be every day; we can do it by God’s grace,” the Archbishop said.
