Woman Allegedly Chained by Brother for 16 Months

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a 36-year-old woman, identified as Grace Aniekuoku, who was allegedly chained and confined in a room by her brother for over one year and four months in Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed the development on Monday, revealing that the command received a distress report on June 12, 2026, regarding the victim’s alleged unlawful detention under inhumane conditions.

According to the police commissioner, detectives attached to the Katampe Division were immediately deployed to investigate the report.

He explained that upon arrival at the residence, the suspect allegedly resisted officers and refused to grant them access to the area where the victim was being held.

The officers eventually gained entry and discovered the woman chained inside a room. Police said she appeared severely malnourished and was found lying in unsanitary conditions.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, while the victim was rescued and taken to a hospital, where she is currently receiving medical attention.

Preliminary findings by investigators further indicated that the suspect had allegedly taken the victim’s son to an undisclosed location approximately two years ago.

Police believe the prolonged confinement may have been aimed at preventing the woman from questioning the whereabouts of her child.

Sanusi stated that efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the missing child, while the victim continues to receive treatment and rehabilitation.

He added that the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and urged residents to promptly report cases of abuse, unlawful detention, and other criminal activities to security agencies

A High court sitting in Okitipupa has nullified the Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy declaration, holding that the State Government had no power to create a new chieftaincy without the consent of the Rebuja of Osooro land, the prescribed authority over chieftaincy matters in the communities within Osooro land, including Iju-Odo Community.
