The Osun State Government has commenced a one-day orientation workshop for Health Technicians, Health Assistants, Dental Health Technicians and Dental Health Technologists as part of efforts to strengthen primary healthcare service delivery across the state.
The training, organised by the Osun State Primary Healthcare Development Board (OSPHCDB), began on Wednesday at Halatria Hotel in Osogbo. It is designed to equip frontline healthcare workers with updated knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies to enhance service delivery at Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Osun State.
Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Health, Hon. Jola Akinola, reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration to building a stronger primary healthcare system through continuous capacity development, workforce improvement and quality healthcare services.
Akinola described the participants as indispensable to the state's healthcare system, noting that they constitute the first point of contact for many residents seeking medical care, particularly at the grassroots.
He urged the participants to maximise the opportunity provided by the training by embracing modern healthcare practices, upholding professional ethics and applying the knowledge gained to improve patient care in their respective facilities.
According to the commissioner, the Adeleke administration remains committed to repositioning the primary healthcare sector through sustained investments in human resources, infrastructure, medical equipment and continuous professional development.
"The quality of healthcare delivery depends largely on the competence and commitment of frontline health workers. This orientation is designed to strengthen your capacity so that our people can continue to enjoy accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services," Akinola said.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Osun State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Dr. Shina Igbalaye, described the workshop as a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the knowledge, technical competence and efficiency of frontline healthcare personnel.
He explained that the Board is committed to building a highly skilled workforce capable of responding effectively to the evolving healthcare needs of communities across the state.
Dr. Igbalaye noted that regular capacity-building programmes have become essential in addressing emerging health challenges and keeping healthcare workers abreast of global best practices in primary healthcare delivery.
He commended Governor Adeleke for his unwavering support for the health sector, saying the administration's investments in primary healthcare have significantly strengthened service delivery and improved access to quality healthcare across the state.
According to him, the government's support has enabled the Board to implement programmes that enhance the competence of healthcare workers while improving the quality of services available to residents, particularly at the grassroots.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Osun State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Alhaji Tajudeen Adisa, urged participants to approach the training with dedication, discipline and a willingness to learn.
He encouraged them to actively participate in all sessions and ensure that the knowledge acquired translates into improved healthcare services in their respective Primary Healthcare Centres.
Adisa stressed that the success of the state's primary healthcare system depends largely on the professionalism, ethical conduct and commitment of frontline health workers.
He therefore charged the participants to remain worthy ambassadors of the Board by demonstrating excellence, compassion and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
The orientation workshop attracted Health Technicians, Health Assistants, Dental Health Technicians and Dental Health Technologists from Primary Healthcare Centres across Osun State.
Participants are expected to receive intensive training on professional standards, patient care, service delivery, teamwork and other critical components of primary healthcare aimed at improving health outcomes in communities across the state.
The programme forms part of the Osun State Government's broader strategy to strengthen the primary healthcare system and ensure that residents, especially those in rural communities, have access to efficient, people-centred and quality healthcare services delivered by a well-trained and motivated workforce .
