A 400-level nursing student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, Awoyemi Covenant, has won the Best Research Innovation of the Year award at the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 Grand Finale in London, United Kingdom.
Covenant emerged as the winner at the international competition held from October 7 to 11, 2026, after progressing through a series of national selection stages.
The university announced the achievement on its social media platform on Monday, describing the feat as a significant milestone for the institution and Nigeria's innovation sector.
According to OOU, Covenant was selected after participating in a national innovation programme, where she represented Ogun State at the National Showcase in Abuja alongside more than 2,900 participants.
She subsequently emerged among the 70 candidates shortlisted for the grand finale in London, where her innovation earned her the prestigious award.
The nursing student developed a biodigester appliance designed to convert livestock waste into biogas, a renewable energy source that can be used for cooking and other domestic energy needs.
The innovation offers a potential solution to challenges associated with animal waste disposal while promoting cleaner energy alternatives and sustainable waste management.
Covenant's achievement highlights the growing contribution of Nigerian students to research, technological development and innovative solutions to environmental and energy challenges.
The award also brings recognition to Olabisi Onabanjo University and underscores the potential of young Nigerian innovators to compete on the international stage.
