OSOPADEC Unveils Multi-Million-Naira Development Vision for Ugbonla

Excitement is building across the mandate areas of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) as Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is expected to formally unveil the proposed University of Maritime Transport and Logistics in Ugbonla in February 2027.

The development was disclosed by OSOPADEC Executive Chairman, Prince Biyi Poroye, during an on-the-spot assessment of facilities at the institution on Tuesday. He expressed optimism that the proposed upgrade from the School of Maritime Transport and Logistics to university status would mark a significant milestone in the educational and socio-economic development of the oil-producing communities.

Accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Professor Temi Ologunorisa, Poroye reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to building a modern maritime institution capable of positioning Ondo State as a major hub for maritime education, transport and logistics.

He noted that stakeholders and residents of the mandate areas had appealed to Governor Aiyedatiwa to approve the institution's elevation to university status, expressing hope that the request would receive favourable consideration as the necessary facilities are completed.

"Our vision is to build an institution that will stand the test of time, provide quality maritime education and open up new opportunities for our people," Poroye said, adding that the project would strengthen the state's capacity to benefit from the maritime and blue economy sectors.

As part of preparations for the proposed take-off, the OSOPADEC chairman disclosed that the Commission was prioritising the completion of 200-bed male and female hostel facilities to provide students with adequate accommodation and a conducive learning environment.

The institution is also being positioned to offer specialised programmes in Maritime Security and Safety, Maritime Economics, Finance and Blue Economy, Transport and Logistics Management, Climate Change and Ocean Studies, Maritime Environmental Management, Shipping and Maritime Business, and Port Management and Operations.

Beyond academic infrastructure, Poroye revealed that plans were underway to provide a semi-stadium to promote sports, recreation and talent development among students.

He also highlighted the economic significance of the Omuro International Market in Ugbonla, noting that the facility is expected to stimulate commercial activities, create employment opportunities and support small businesses in the host communities and neighbouring areas.

On security, the chairman disclosed plans to establish a Nigerian Navy operating base close to the proposed university to strengthen security and create a safe environment for students, staff, residents and prospective investors.

Poroye further revealed that a medical centre had been constructed to serve the institution and surrounding communities. The facility is expected to be managed by OSOPADEC in collaboration with the Ugboland Host Communities Development Trust (UHCDT).

According to him, the projects form part of a broader development strategy designed to integrate educational, commercial, healthcare and security infrastructure, ensuring that the benefits of the proposed university extend beyond the campus to the wider community.

Poroye commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to the development of OSOPADEC mandate areas, assuring that the Commission would continue to support the administration's agenda through projects capable of delivering lasting benefits to the people.
