Tinubu Orders Increased Funding for Federal University of Health Sciences

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to increase funding for the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi State, to strengthen its capacity to train qualified healthcare professionals.

Tinubu gave the directive during the maiden convocation ceremony of the university in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The President, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Mr Sonny Echono, said improved funding would enable the specialised institution to produce competent healthcare professionals capable of competing globally and contributing to improved healthcare delivery.

He congratulated the university's pioneer graduates on their academic achievement and urged them to apply their knowledge and skills towards improving the health and well-being of Nigerians.

Tinubu also charged the graduates to uphold professional ethics, demonstrate excellence and remain committed to saving lives wherever they might practise.

He explained that his administration introduced the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to address financial barriers preventing many Nigerians from accessing tertiary education.

In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, acknowledged the Federal Government's investments in the education and health sectors, despite political differences between his administration and the Federal Government.

Mohammed pledged his administration's commitment to complementing federal investments and supporting initiatives that would improve the quality of education and healthcare in the state.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Bala Mohammed Abdu, announced the conferment of honorary doctoral degrees on former Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, and the university's Chancellor, the Emir of Argungu in Kebbi State, Alhaji Sama'ila Mohammed Mera, in recognition of their contributions to the institution.

Established in 2021, the university has expanded from five academic programmes at inception to 20, while its workforce has grown from 239 to more than 800.

The convocation also celebrated the institution's graduates, with three female graduates reportedly earning first-class degrees.
