Gov Makinde to Corps Members: Become catalysts for national renewal through patriotism

The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has challenged members of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream II National Youth Service Corps to become catalysts for national renewal through patriotism, selfless service, integrity and active participation in nation-building.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, the Governor gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Gbakuta, Iseyin.

He described the Scheme as an enduring instrument of national cohesion, which has, for over five decades, promoted cultural understanding, strengthened national integration and mobilised Nigerian graduates for national development.

Emphasising their strategic role in Nigeria’s democratic process, Governor Makinde urged Corps Members to uphold electoral integrity, remain non-partisan and discharge their electoral responsibilities in accordance with the Electoral Act, resisting all forms of inducement.

He also encouraged them to maximise the three-week Orientation Course, particularly the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, as a pathway to entrepreneurship, wealth creation and economic independence.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to their welfare and security, while urging them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities.

Earlier, the NYSC Oyo State Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Ola Peters, described the Orientation Course as the foundation for a purposeful service year, designed to instil resilience, responsible citizenship, leadership and national consciousness.

With reference to the theme, “Reimagining the Orientation Course: Building Resilient, Responsible and Service-Oriented Corps Members for a Changing World,” he highlighted the programme’s components, including paramilitary drills, physical training, lectures, entrepreneurship development, cultural activities and inter-platoon competitions.

He urged the Corps Members to participate enthusiastically, stressing that their attitude and commitment would determine the value they derived from the exercise.

The State Coordinator expressed profound appreciation to Governor Makinde for his sustained support for the Scheme, particularly the provision of 800 mattresses for the Permanent Orientation Camp and the prompt payment of allowances to Corps Members serving in various state government establishments.

He described these interventions as evidence of the administration’s commitment to Corps Members’ welfare, assuring that the NYSC management and participants would reciprocate through dedicated service and meaningful contributions to Oyo State. He also commended camp officials and staff for their diligence in ensuring a successful Orientation Course.

Addressing the Corps Members, Mr. Peters urged them to regard national service as an opportunity for personal transformation, intercultural relationships, skills acquisition and purposeful community development. He charged them to respect constituted authority, adhere strictly to camp regulations and demonstrate maturity in their interactions with fellow Nigerians.

He also acknowledged the presence of the Chief Judge of Oyo State, represented by Hon. Justice O. M. Oladejo, who administered the Oath of Allegiance, alongside government functionaries, traditional rulers, community leaders and other distinguished guests.

Declaring the three-week Orientation Course open, Governor Makinde urged the Corps Members to choose service over selfishness, hope over despair and integrity over expediency.

He reminded them that the responsibility for building a prosperous and united nation rests not on government alone but on the collective commitment of all citizens, particularly the youth, whose energy, ideals and contributions remain indispensable to Nigeria’s future.
