June 12: Protest rocks Akure.

Angry youths defile the conventional way of celebrating Democracy Day in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Saturday by occupying major roads in Protest against bad governance, kidnapping, banditry, unemployment and high price of commodities.

The Protesters matched round Akure metropolis including the popular oba Adesida Road, Arakale, Ondo road, Nepa, Hospital and Oyemekun.

The Protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such as “Buhari must go, constitutional review is a scam, we say no kidding, we say no to banditry , end terrorising” among others.

While speaking, the leader of the Protesters, Barr. Tope Temokun said the Protest is not about succession but demand for good government.

According to him, “the Protest is against the systemic government that has continued for the past years failed Nigerians.

“We are tired of dying, we tired of not being able to use our roads, we are tired of our farmers not being able to access their farmers because of Fulani herdsmen, we are tired of seeing terrorists being recruited into the Nigerian Army while our activists are being sent into detention”.

Also Bukola Oyedemi said they are protesting against the systemic government that has continued to failed Nigerians and they want a change.

Alex Adeniyi frowned at the recent ban on Twitter, describing it as “a breach of fundamental human right of expression”.

Other Protesters called on all stakeholders to rise up to it’s responsibilities.

Meanwhile, residents of Akure are staying at home today even without a sit-at-home order from government or security agencies over fear of attacks after wide spread rumours.

The people are apprehensive based on information that some groups of people would be storming the city to stage a protest against all forms of violence in the country and that the protest could be hijacked by hoodlums thereby causing war.

Also, heavily-armed security men from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps among others are patrolling major streets in Akure to prevent criminal activity.
