Council holds quiz competition to improve pupils in Ibadan

The Ibadan North-West Local Government Council of Oyo State has organised a quiz competition for public primary school pupils in the area to identify and encourage brilliant ones.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the three-day competition focused on English, Mathematics and General Studies.

Speaking at the grand finale on Thursday in Ibadan, the council’s Chairman, Mr Rahman Adepoju, said the competition, themed “Rahman Adepoju 2022 Elementary Education Challenges”, was to prepare the pupils for the future.

He said the council recognising the importance of education, in 2021, distributed exercise books, and a compendium of pupils in the area to complement state government’s efforts at ensuring quality education.

He said the state government had not spared any effort in ensuring that education was given the priority it deserved.

Adepoju said Gov. Seyi Makinde’s administration removed payment of school fees; reduced fees paid by tertiary students, employed teachers and provided essential grants to make teaching functional.

“All these are to build future leaders that will make Nigeria great.

“Uneducated children constitute security risks, and are a challenge to the peace and development of the nation,” he said.

The council chairman, therefore, enjoined parents and guardians to help their wards practice all that the teachers had instilled in them.

"Our teachers should also ensure total commitment to their duties to achieve the desired results.

"Oyo state pays salaries regularly so you should reciprocate this kind gesture by living up to the expectations," he said.

An Actress and Cultural Ambassador, Toyin Adegbola, advised students to desist from bad company but focus on their studies.

“We all attended public schools but focused on our studies and refused to be distracted.

“I had all opportunities while growing up to misbehave, but I did not because I knew where I was going,” she said.

NAN also reports that the schools that participated in the  competition included Saviours Apostolic School, UNA Primary School, Army Children's School 2 and Army Children's School 3.

Miss Confidence Festus (Army Children's School 2) emerged the winner, Miss Ebube Joseph (Army Children's School 3) came second, while Ayomide Akinferede from UNA Primary School, took the third position.

The winners all collected gifts worth N20, 000 each, while the schools were given textbooks and other reading materials for their library. (NAN)
