Nigerians have been urged to eradicate malaria as the deadly and dangerous disease has claimed more than 627 thousand lives from the 241 million people affected in 2020
Speaking at a sensitization programme held in Akure to mark the World Malaria Day, the Chief Executive Officer of Restoration of Dignity of Womanhood ROTDOW, Mrs Olabisi Omolona tasked residents to always keep their environment clean to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes which causes malaria.
"In 2020, a total of 241,000,000 cases of malaria were reported while 627, 000 deaths were recorded"
She charged residents to rather work with stakeholders to eradicate malaria than handling it with levity because the disease is deadly.
She appealed that people should make use of mosquito nets which she said would enable the residents protect themselves from the mosquito bites which leads to malaria.
In her good will message, representative of the Permanent Secretary to Ondo State Primary Health Care Agency, Mrs Titilope Akinlalu encouraged the women to register early for Ante Natal Clinic when pregnant for the uptake of SP advising that pregnant women should undergoes text rather than taking malaria drugs because every febkver she said is not malaria.
Representative of the Programme Manager of the state Primary Health , Mr Temidayo Adeola encouraged participants to make use of the long lasting Insecticidal Nets distributed last December and called on pregnant women to register at public health centers for their Ante natal clinic to uptake Sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine SP to prevent malaria in pregnancy
In a presentation titled " Harness Innovation to reduce The Malaria Disease Burden and saves lives", Mrs.Dada Oluwatoyin, said Malaria has caused havoc which she observed has portrayed a deadly task in Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
Oluwatuyi, while explaining that mosquitoes causes malaria through transferring it from one person to the other, highlighted various signs of the syndrome to include; high temperature, headache, sleeplessness and stomach interruption.
"Malaria makes a pregnant woman have miscarriage, if the pregnancy is not up to 3 to 4 months. It also affects the placenta, it will eventually lead to bleeding and the child will die which shows that malaria can affect anybody even the unborn child."
In an interview with our correspondent, the state Chairperson of Women wing of Christians Association of Nigeria WOWICAN, Deaconess Ademokoya Grace, observed the need to get people more educated on the disease and how to prevent and cure the infected people.
Also, the Ondo State Coordinator and Chairman of ACOMIN, a civil society that works on malaria control, immunization and nutrition in Nigeria, said malaria is curable and preventable disease, but that people should beware of its symptoms.
"Malaria is a curable disease, also an infection that can be prevented than causing havoc, poverty, and economy problem that is affecting our people. It is only adding up to their burdens.
He called for an immediate attention of government on what he described as adulterated malaria drugs in town.
