Rev. Olasupo Ayokunle, former National President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on successive governments to build a productive economy to create job opportunities and prosperity.
Ayokunle, who is the President, WayMaker International Ministry, said this at a conference organised by the ministry on Friday in Ibadan.
He said that Nigeria needed to move from a consuming economy to a more productive one to achieve greatness.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference was entitled, ‘Productive Leadership For Organisational Growth”.
Ayokunle said the bane of Nigeria was that the country consumed more than it could produce.
He reiterated that a non producing country would continue to depend on productive countries for survival.
He said that working refineries for the country’s petroleum products would have enthroned cheaper and readily available products and create more job opportunities for youths.
He stressed that prices of goods and services were high because the country was not producing many of the things it needed.
Ayokunle said the conference was one of the efforts of WayMaker Ministry to impact the lives of leaders on various aspects of life.
"Jesus doesn't only expect us to be productive but to surpass our daily best, in productivity, we will resemble Jesus our Lord and perfect example of productive leadership," he said.
The General Overseer, Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Rev. Sam Aboyeji, said strategy and action plans without the fire of enthusiasm would produce nothing.
According to Aboyeji, leaders will lack conviction and integrity without the fear of God and thus never be productive.
He says unfaithfulness produces bad jobs and negative productivity while integrity is synonymous with a leader’s quality control mechanism.
Quoting Matthew 5:16, the Foursquare G. O urged Nigerians, especially Christians to let their light shine before men that they will see their good works and glorify their father which is in heaven.
He emphasised that good leadership would lead to good works while integrity should be a watchword for Christians and leaders at all levels.
"Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people, Christians should be courageous enough to take a stand and be good examples of good leadership.
"Do good to all men especially those in the household of faith," he said.
Also, Prof. Tunji Olaopa of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, Kuru in Plateau, said leaders should have a mind open to ideas and attuned to continuous learning.
He said that to make critical transformation in the country, the building of institutions was very germane.
He said the country needed core, selfless leaders who would take the burden of rebuilding its walls as Nehemiah did in the Bible.
“We need those who will bargain among themselves and resolve that this great country must be savaged, it’s that which will proclaim a real definition of vision.
"It's that which will make us to do things right and continue to do things right and propel zero tolerance to corruption," he said. (NAN)
