The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, DSS, fdc, MTRCN, MNARC has charged corps members to strive to meet the expectations and aspirations of Nigeria towards the progress and development of the country.
Brigadier General Ahmed made the charge in his address at the closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch 'A' (Stream 1) orientation course held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.
The Director General who was represented at the ceremony by the NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani commended the corps members for participating actively in the camp activities and exhibiting high level of discipline.
The NYSC boss enjoined the members of the service corps to perform their duties with diligence and be guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and Bye-Laws as well as workplace rules and regulations.
He reiterated the need for the corps members to integrate into the host communities and respect their cultures while encouraging them to undertake personal and group Community Development Service projects that will help to uplift the living standard of the host communities.
The one star General disclosed that he has received impressive reports on the participation of the corps members in entrepreneurial trainings under the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme of the noble Scheme.
"I encourage you to build on the skills acquired by availing yourselves of opportunities for post-camp training as this will go a long way in empowering you for self-reliance. On our part, we will continue to liaise with financial institutions and other stakeholders with a view to providing start-up loans to enable you actualise your business dreams".
The top military officer and security expert urged the corps participants to be security conscious at all times as he declared that security is everybody's business and enjoined them to avoid acts that can endanger their lives.
"On our part, we are committed to making adequate provisions for your security and general welfare in line with the policy thrusts of my administration. Accordingly, we are in constant liaison with security agencies and other critical stakeholders with a view to ensuring your safety as well as addressing other essential needs for a fulfilling service year".
The 20th Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the laudable Scheme disclosed that corps members will form majority of ad-hoc personnel that will be enlisted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct 2023 general elections and warned them against any untoward behaviour.
"You are to ensure adherence to the guidelines contained in the Electoral Act and remain neutral throughout the exercise. As you get set to partake in this important national assignment, I would like to assure you that we have secured the commitment of INEC and security agencies regarding your welfare and safety before, during and after the elections".
General Ahmed warned them against unauthorised and night journeys ordering that they should cut short their trips from six o' clock in the evening and pass the night at NYSC Lodges, military barracks and other locations officially designated as safe.
The number one corps member nationwide appealed to Corps Employers to always accept corps members posted to them and make necessary provisions for their welfare.
"I urge employers to mentor these young Nigerians properly to enable them develop their potentials. I also call on other stakeholders, including State and Local Government authorities as well as traditional rulers, to give the necessary encouragement to the corps members" he concluded.
The three weeks induction course which commenced three weeks ago had total number of 1153 corps members registered for the 2023 Batch 'A' (Stream 1) service year in Ondo, the Sunshine State.
