The NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has charged corps members to engage in any competition with a mindset to foster unity and strengthen relationships that will last beyond orientation camp.
The State Coordinator made the charge while performing the traditional kick-off for the finals of the football and volleyball competitions at the sports arena of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.
Mrs. Ani who harped on sustaining relationships on the basis of the common ties that they have shared during the orientation course believed that unity and integration of the components that made up the country should be paramount and guide their conduct throughout the service year and beyond.
"My Kings and Queens, the friendship that you have established in the last three weeks should propel you to sustain that relationships which I strongly believe will form part of your sensitisation and advocacy to the people in your host communities that staying together irrespective of our tribe, culture and language is our strength as a nation".
The NYSC Ondo State boss admonished players on the field of play to exhibit the traits of sportsmanship and put any act of aggression behind them so that the competition will retain its purpose which is to entertain and relieve tension.
"Let me send a strong signal to our players in football. We all know that the round leather game is a contact sport and I want to appeal to you to exercise some restraint in the face of provocation. Display maturity in the field of play as this will enhance your rating in public eye. If you miss the ball, endeavour to miss the leg" she insisted.
The sports loving administrator opined that if sports can make individuals become friends, then corps members who have been with their platoons at every stage of all competition should promote unity within the locality they would be posted to.
In her opening remarks, the Head of Sports and Games, Mrs. Martha Ihenyen appreciated the State Coordinator and members of the Principal Camp Officials for standing solidly behind her committee.
Mrs. Ihenyen, who is the Assistant Director/Head, Community Development Service (CDS) Branch acknowledged the financial commitment of the State Coordinator towards all the activities and gave special recognition to the Camp Commandant, Major Mshelia for his personal cash donation to best players in the competition.
The finals of football match produced number 10 platoon as winners as they edged out number 6 platoon by two goals to one while number 4 platoon came third.
The volleyball produced number 3 as winners after thrashing number 4 platoon. The third position went to number 6 platoon.
