The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has reached out to the Ondo State Children Correctional Centre as part of its week‑long Press Week celebrations.
The Union’s State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite said the humanitarian visit reflects the union’s tradition of supporting both its members and the broader community, especially the less privileged.
Adegbite who was represented by Union’s Secretary, Comrade Meshack Olaoluwa, Adegbite explained that the visit was deliberately included in the Press Week programme to showcase the union’s commitment to compassion and social responsibility.
He reminded that promoting justice, fairness and equal treatment for all is a core mandate of the NUJ, and that the union remains aware of the challenges faced by inmates and correctional facilities.
The chairman assured that the gesture would not be a one‑off event, pledging continued outreach beyond the annual Press Week.
“This token is not the end. By God’s grace, it will not be until next year again before we reach out. That is who we are as NUJ,” he said, while praying for blessings on the centre’s management and beneficiaries.
In response, State Director of the Children Correctional Centre, Mr. Oyebuwa Adebayo, thanked the NUJ on behalf of staff and inmates, describing the donation as timely and impactful.
He said the items would be distributed to children in conflict with the law and other vulnerable children under the ministry’s care, adding that such support aids their welfare and rehabilitation.
Adebayo also praised the Ondo State Government for its ongoing commitment to vulnerable children, noting Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s regular subventions, feeding, clothing, laundry services and facility maintenance.
He highlighted that the governor’s efforts have helped maintain a peaceful environment essential for social‑welfare institutions.
Finally, the director thanked Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Seun Osamaye, and the state executive for their continued backing of social‑welfare initiatives, emphasizing that their support makes such humanitarian actions possible.
