A grisly attack unfolded early Monday morning in the Hotoro Maraba district of Tarauni Local Government, Kano State, when an unknown assailant slit the throat of Malam Kasim, the muezzin who was about to call the dawn (Asuba) prayer.
According to an eyewitness, the brutal act took place inside the mosque, turning a place of worship into a scene of terror.
The victim, identified as Malam Kasim, was found dead on the mosque floor with evident signs of a struggle. “We discovered our father’s body in the mosque.
There were clear signs of a struggle, and the entire community was thrown into fear,” said Maryam Kasim, one of his daughters, her voice trembling as she recounted the discovery.
The shocking murder quickly ignited outrage among local youths, who apprehended the suspected attacker and killed him on the spot.
The swift retaliation heightened the tension that already gripped the neighborhood, prompting residents to gather in anger and disbelief.
Police were swift to deploy additional security personnel to the area to prevent further violence and restore order.
“We have cordoned off the mosque and surrounding streets while investigations are underway,” a senior officer told reporters, though the Kano State Police Command had not issued an official statement at the time of filing.
Local leaders condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the spiritual heart of the community. “No one should feel unsafe while performing their religious duties,” said the Imam of the mosque, urging calm while calling for justice.
