A Point-of-Sale (POS) operator, Raphael Eletanye, 38, was killed by suspected armed robbers in Benin City, Edo State, on January 3.
The incident occurred at about 9:50 pm along Murtala Muhammed Way, near Upper Uwa Junction, where Eletanye operated his business.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants arrived in an unregistered white minibus and attacked the victim at his business location before fleeing the scene.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, saying the victim died from injuries sustained during the attack.
"The unknown armed men operated in an unregistered white mini-bus. The Divisional Police Officer, Esigie Division was immediately mobilised to the scene. The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital but unfortunately was confirmed dead," she said.
Ikoedem said the police were working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, and urged members of the public with useful information to contact the Command through its 24-hour emergency lines.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
The police are intensifying efforts to curb armed robbery and other crimes in the state, in collaboration with sister security agencies.
The Edo State Government has provided vehicles and other security equipment to support the police and other security outfits in ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and business owners in the area, who are calling for increased security measures to prevent such attacks.

Eletanye's killing is the latest in a string of violent attacks on POS operators in Nigeria, highlighting the need for improved security measures to protect businesses and individuals.
