The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced a major intervention project at Edo State Polytechnic, Usen (ESPU), Ovia South-West Local Government Area, aimed at transforming the institution’s infrastructure and learning environment.
The leadership of the Commission, alongside members of its executive team, visited the institution to assess the state of facilities and flag off the reconstruction of critical projects within the campus.
The visit was received with excitement by students, management, and residents of the host community who have long yearned for improved infrastructure.
Top on the list of projects is the reconstruction of the school’s access road, which has for years posed serious challenges to students, staff, and visitors. The deplorable condition of the road has been blamed for low student enrollment and the difficulty experienced by commuters accessing the campus.
In addition to the road project, the NDDC is also set to rehabilitate and upgrade the Boys’ and Girls’ Hostels within the institution. The hostel facilities, which had deteriorated over time, will now undergo comprehensive renovation to provide a more conducive and secure living environment for students.
To further enhance security and improve the aesthetics of the campus, the Commission is installing modern streetlights across the school and its surrounding environment.
The initiative is expected to illuminate the campus at night, effectively making it “look like daylight” and ensuring safety for students and staff after dark.
Speaking during the visit, the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo assured the management and students of the institution that his administration would do everything necessary to reposition the polytechnic for excellence.
He pledged that the state government would complement the NDDC’s efforts to ensure lasting development.
The governor acknowledged that Edo State Polytechnic, Usen has suffered a shortage of candidates in recent years, largely due to poor road access, unstable electricity supply, inadequate street lighting, and the general outlook of the campus.
He noted that these challenges have discouraged prospective students from seeking admission into the institution.
According to him, the ongoing reconstruction projects would not only improve the learning environment but also restore public confidence in the school.
He emphasized that a well-developed campus would attract students from within and outside Edo State, thereby boosting enrollment and academic growth.
As part of his commitment, Governor Okpebholo also promised to provide two buses to ease transportation challenges within the institution.
The combined efforts of the NDDC and the Edo State Government are expected to usher in a new phase of development for Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, positioning it as a competitive and attractive institution in the region.
