Ahead of the 2027 general elections, an All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly aspirant for Idanre Constituency, Hon. Oyewole Aderemi, has raised alarm over an alleged assassination or kidnapping attempt at his residence in Idanre, Ondo State.
In a statement made available to journalists, Aderemi disclosed that the incident occurred earlier in the day when no fewer than 17 armed men reportedly stormed his home, claiming to be operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
According to him, the heavily armed group arrived in large numbers, harassed security personnel on duty, and intimidated members of his household in what he described as a coordinated and deliberate attack.
Eyewitnesses said the suspected assailants fired gunshots at the doors of the residence while attempting to force their way inside. However, their efforts proved unsuccessful as they were unable to locate the politician.
Frustrated by their inability to find Aderemi, the attackers reportedly turned their aggression on his wife, subjecting her to harassment and threats before eventually leaving the premises.
Sources close to the scene revealed that the suspects were overheard expressing anger among themselves over the botched operation, further heightening suspicion about their mission.
Initial findings following the incident have cast doubt on the identity of the armed men, as reports indicate they failed to properly log their presence at the Idanre Police Station, a standard procedure for official security operations.
Further checks, including a direct inquiry to the IRT headquarters in Abuja, reportedly confirmed that no personnel were deployed to Idanre for any operation at the time, strengthening claims that the attackers may have been impersonators.
Reacting to the incident, Aderemi called on security agencies to launch an immediate investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
He also expressed concern over his personal safety, alleging that the attack may be politically motivated, and warned that certain individuals, including some APC leaders, should be held accountable if any harm befalls him.
Describing politics as not a “do-or-die affair,” the aspirant urged the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State to take swift action to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and prevent a recurrence.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official response.
