Tension in Abeokuta as Politician Assassinated Weeks Before Election

Panic and political tension have gripped parts of Abeokuta following the assassination of a local politician, Adeleke, who was contesting for the Ward 15 seat in Abeokuta South Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred at the Jide Jones area of Abeokuta, has sent shockwaves through the community, especially coming barely two to three weeks before the scheduled local government elections.

According to an eyewitness, Omolola Adelanwa, who was present at the scene, the attack was carried out in a brazen manner by a man she identified as Lekan, popularly known as “Baba Dudu.” Omolola stated that she clearly saw the assailant during the incident and later reported to the police, confirming that she knew the suspect prior to the attack.

Sources within the community revealed that the deceased, Adeleke, had been actively involved in grassroots mobilization and was considered a strong contender in the upcoming election before his sudden killing.

However, in a disturbing twist, Omolola has raised serious concerns over her safety and that of her children, alleging that suspected members of the Eye cult group have been threatening her life following her decision to come forward as a witness.

She claimed that the threats are aimed at silencing her and preventing her from cooperating further with investigators. Despite reporting the matter, she alleged that she has not received adequate protection or response from law enforcement authorities.

“I am living in fear. They are after me and my children because I spoke the truth,” she lamented, calling on relevant security agencies to urgently intervene.

Residents of the Jide Jones area have also expressed fear over rising insecurity and the potential for further violence, particularly in the lead-up to the elections. Many have called on the police and other security agencies to ensure the immediate arrest of the suspect and provide protection for the witness.

Political observers say the killing raises fresh concerns about electoral violence and the role of criminal elements in local politics, warning that failure to act swiftly could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to get an official reaction from the police authorities were unsuccessful. However, community leaders and stakeholders continue to urge security agencies to intensify investigations and bring those responsible to justice.

The assassination has further heightened anxiety in Abeokuta, with many residents hoping for swift action to prevent a breakdown of law and order ahead of the elections.
