Shock as Prophet Allegedly Defrauds Church Members of N70.39m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into a self-acclaimed prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, over allegations of defrauding members of his ministry of about N70.39 million.

The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement shared on its official X account on Wednesday, stating that operatives of its Enugu Zonal Directorate are currently handling the matter.

According to the EFCC, the suspect allegedly obtained money from church members through various schemes, including promises of spiritual intervention and investment opportunities.

One of the petitioners, identified as Okey Uwakwe, alleged that Ajuluchukwucheya collected N6.23 million from him for spiritual exercises intended to convince his brother, who had been living abroad since 1997, to return to Nigeria.

Uwakwe further claimed that he paid another N3.25 million to the suspect for spiritual activities aimed at helping his sister-in-law conceive after more than 15 years of childlessness.

The petitioner also alleged that the cleric informed members of his ministry that he had won a N33 billion lottery and encouraged them to contribute financially with promises of future returns from the supposed winnings.

Based on the claims, Uwakwe reportedly contributed an additional N3.35 million to the scheme and another N500,000 toward a rice-processing business allegedly valued at N1 billion.

In total, the petitioner said he paid N13.33 million to the suspect without receiving any promised benefit.

The EFCC stated that as investigations progressed, several other ministry members came forward with similar complaints.

Some of the alleged victims claimed the suspect sold items described as “holy ghost thunder,” “miracle stickers,” and “spiritual dragons,” assuring buyers of prosperity and solutions to personal challenges.

One victim reportedly told investigators that despite making payments for the so-called spiritual products, no improvement occurred in their situation.

According to the commission, the cumulative amount allegedly collected from ministry members stands at N70.39 million.

The EFCC added that investigations remain ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the inquiry.

A High court sitting in Okitipupa has nullified the Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy declaration, holding that the State Government had no power to create a new chieftaincy without the consent of the Rebuja of Osooro land, the prescribed authority over chieftaincy matters in the communities within Osooro land, including Iju-Odo Community.
