Tension in Ondo as Soldier Allegedly Kills Driver

There was tension and disruption of vehicular movement along the Okitipupa–Ore Highway on Wednesday following the alleged fatal shooting of a driver identified as Solomon James, an indigene of Kogi State.

THE HOPE gathered that the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. The deceased was reportedly transporting kegs of diesel in his vehicle when he was allegedly pursued by a soldier riding a motorcycle before being shot around the D-Choice area in Ore.

Eyewitnesses claimed the chase continued for some distance before gunshots were allegedly fired at the moving vehicle.

According to eyewitness accounts, the driver sustained gunshot injuries, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and stop in a nearby bush. The soldier involved was said to have fled the scene immediately after the incident.



When our correspondent visited the area, several bullet holes were observed on the vehicle. The incident also attracted residents and road users, resulting in temporary traffic disruption along the highway.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting remain unclear as of the time of filing this report, while authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.




Residents and commuters expressed concern over the development and called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation and ensure accountability.

However, a security source confirmed the incident to THE HOPE correspondent.

Court Strikes out Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy Declaration

A High court sitting in Okitipupa has nullified the Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy declaration, holding that the State Government had no power to create a new chieftaincy without the consent of the Rebuja of Osooro land, the prescribed authority over chieftaincy matters in the communities within Osooro land, including Iju-Odo Community.
