The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Professor Tomola Obamuyi, has commended Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for approving and releasing over ₦1 billion as a special intervention fund to offset outstanding salary arrears owed to university workers.
Professor Obamuyi described the governor's intervention as a timely and significant step towards resolving the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), expressing optimism that normal academic activities would soon resume.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Vice-Chancellor said the intervention demonstrates Governor Aiyedatiwa's commitment to strengthening tertiary education in Ondo State and improving the welfare of staff of the state-owned institution.
According to him, the release of the fund reflects the administration's determination to ensure industrial harmony, preserve the university's academic calendar and prevent further disruptions to students' education.
Obamuyi noted that the intervention would not only address pressing welfare concerns but also create the right atmosphere for the restoration of teaching, research and other academic activities.
He assured the governor that the university community would remain dedicated to its core mandates of teaching, research and community service, while sustaining peace and stability within the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor also reaffirmed AAUA's commitment to supporting the state government's vision of promoting academic excellence and sustainable educational development.
Expressing confidence that the intervention would facilitate the suspension of the ongoing strike, Obamuyi said the development offers renewed hope to students, parents and other stakeholders eagerly awaiting the reopening of the university.
The AAUA chapter of ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike on July 10, 2026, following the non-payment of two months' salary arrears, a development that brought academic activities at the institution to a standstill.
The Ondo State Government's latest intervention is expected to ease tensions between the university authorities and the academic union, paving the way for dialogue and the eventual resumption of normal academic activities.
