It was a moment of joy and celebration on Sunday as eminent scholar, Professor Charles Israel Afolabi, marked his 80th birthday with a colourful ceremony attended by family members, friends, colleagues, associates, and well-wishers in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The celebration began with a thanksgiving service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, where the octogenarian offered gratitude to God for His faithfulness, protection, and abundant blessings over the past eight decades.
The thanksgiving service featured special prayers, hymns, scriptural readings, and blessings for Professor Afolabi and his family, as worshippers joined him in celebrating a life dedicated to scholarship, service, and humanity.
Newsline NG learnt that guests proceeded to Mauve 21 Event Centre on MKO Abiola Way, Ring Road, near Adeoyo Roundabout, Ibadan, where family members, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers were lavishly entertained at a grand reception held in honour of Professor Charles Israel Afolabi's 80th birthday.
The reception witnessed a large turnout of distinguished personalities, including academics, religious leaders, professionals, community leaders, family members, and friends, all of whom gathered to celebrate Professor Afolabi's remarkable life and enduring legacy.
The atmosphere was lively as guests were entertained with captivating musical performances, cultural displays, and a variety of delicious meals, making the occasion a memorable one for everyone in attendance.
In separate interviews with Newsline NG, Pastor Jide Afolabi described the celebrant as a disciplined, humble, and God-fearing father whose life has continued to inspire countless people through his unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and service.
He noted that Professor Afolabi's exemplary character and dedication to education have earned him respect across generations, praying that God would continue to bless him with sound health and many more fruitful years.
Also speaking, Mr. Ayobami Afolabi thanked God for the grace bestowed upon the celebrant, describing him as a loving father and mentor whose wisdom, humility, and strong family values have positively impacted many lives.
Similarly, Mr. Tobi Afolabi hailed Professor Afolabi as a role model whose life exemplifies hard work, resilience, and selfless service, expressing confidence that his legacy would continue to inspire younger generations.
Also speaking, Mrs. Oluwatosin Adegboye extolled the virtues of Professor Charles Israel Afolabi, describing him as an outstanding scholar, compassionate mentor, and exemplary father whose life has been marked by integrity, humility, and selfless service.
She congratulated him on his 80th birthday, praying that God would grant him continued good health, divine strength, and many more years of peace, fulfilment, and impactful service to humanity.
Several guests who spoke with our correspondent congratulated the octogenarian on attaining the milestone, describing him as an accomplished academic, respected elder statesman, and a man whose contributions to education and community development remain invaluable.
They applauded his commitment to mentoring young people, promoting moral values, and contributing meaningfully to national development through his years of academic excellence and leadership.
Responding, Professor Charles Israel Afolabi expressed appreciation to God for preserving his life and granting him the privilege of celebrating his 80th birthday in good health and surrounded by loved ones.
The celebrant who doubles as President of Third Age University, U3A Nigeria also thanked everyone who travelled from far and near to celebrate with him, expressing gratitude for their prayers, goodwill, and unwavering support over the years.
Professor Afolabi however encouraged people to remain steadfast in their faith, work diligently, and uphold the virtues of humility, perseverance, and integrity, stressing that these qualities are essential for living a purposeful and impactful life.
