Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66.
The news of the death of the highly respected Yoruba actor was announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram Live session on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Ogogo’s death comes barely a week after his family publicly disclosed that the veteran actor was battling stage-four cancer and appealed to medical professionals and well-meaning Nigerians for assistance in securing further treatment.
His daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had earlier made emotional appeals on social media, seeking help from hospitals, cancer specialists and other medical practitioners capable of managing their father’s condition.
The family had disclosed that Ogogo’s condition had become critical and that the medical team treating him could no longer administer chemotherapy. Reports at the time also indicated that the actor was considered too physically fragile to travel abroad for treatment.
The development had sparked widespread concern across the Nigerian entertainment industry, with several Yoruba actors and filmmakers rallying around the veteran actor and offering prayers and support.
On Friday, prominent figures in the Yoruba movie industry, including veteran actors Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Antar Laniyan, Bukky Wright, Wale Elesho, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Fausat Balogun and Bolaji Amusan (Mr Latin), among others, gathered in Lagos for a prayer session for Ogogo.
Ogogo was one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba cinema, with a career spanning more than four decades. He featured in more than 300 films and established himself as an accomplished actor, producer and filmmaker.
His death is expected to leave a significant void in the Yoruba film industry, where he was widely respected for his contributions to the growth and development of indigenous Nigerian cinema.
The actor’s passing also comes after an earlier death rumour concerning him was debunked by his family on August 18. At the time, his daughter, Lima, described the report as fake and urged members of the public to stop spreading unverified information.
However, reports published on Sunday now indicate that the family has confirmed his death through Kira’s Instagram Live session.
As of the time of filing this report, further details regarding the circumstances of his death and funeral arrangements had yet to be officially released by the family.
