The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, with 1,200,514 candidates obtaining the minimum five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics.
The results were announced on Wednesday in Lagos by the Head of the WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, who disclosed that the successful candidates represent 61.54 per cent of those who sat for the examination.
According to him, the performance reflects a 1.42 percentage-point decline compared to the 2025 examination results.
Dr. Dangut stated that 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools across Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 candidates eventually took part in the exercise.
He explained that apart from the 1,200,514 candidates who secured at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, another 1,687,378 candidates, representing 86.50 per cent, obtained five credits or more with or without the two core subjects.
The WAEC boss further revealed that the council had successfully processed and released the results of 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 per cent of those who sat for the examination. However, the results of 116,031 candidates, accounting for 5.95 per cent, are still being processed.
Providing further details, Dr. Dangut said 1,213 candidates with special needs registered for the examination. The figure comprises 137 visually impaired candidates, 491 candidates with hearing impairment, 55 candidates with multiple disabilities, including mental challenges, and 41 physically challenged candidates.
On examination malpractice, he disclosed that the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of the total number of candidates, have been withheld over alleged involvement in examination malpractice.
He noted that the malpractice rate recorded this year represents a reduction of 1.11 percentage points when compared with the 9.70 per cent recorded in the 2025 examination.
WAEC said investigations into the withheld results are ongoing and assured affected candidates that the cases would be treated in line with the council's established regulations before final decisions are taken.
