A man identified simply as Abiodun has reportedly died by suicide in the Idimu area of Lagos State after allegedly consuming an insecticide following a disagreement with his longtime girlfriend.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday evening in the Ire Akari area of the community after the woman allegedly informed him that she was no longer interested in continuing their relationship.
Abiodun, said to be in his early 30s, was reportedly involved in an argument with his girlfriend before she announced her decision to end the relationship.
Sources in the neighbourhood disclosed that the man, who was said to have been holding an insecticide at the time, subsequently consumed its contents.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Abiodun was immediately rushed to a hospital along Powerline Road for medical attention.
According to the resident, efforts were made by neighbours and family members to save his life, but he eventually died.
The source explained that the man's mother, who reportedly works at a supermarket in the area, was alerted to the incident and made frantic efforts to secure medical assistance for her son.
The resident further disclosed that Abiodun's mother attempted to raise money for the purchase of drugs recommended by medical personnel.
However, when she returned to the hospital with the prescribed medications on Sunday morning, she was reportedly informed that her son had died.
The deceased was subsequently buried on Monday, while the whereabouts of his girlfriend remained unknown as of the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not aware of the incident but promised to obtain details and provide further information.
However, she had yet to make a further statement as of press time.
