Gbagira village, a suburb of Awoye riverine community Area in Ilaje Local Government of Ondo State is reportedly under siege following an offshore bloody clash of the Nigerian Naval officers and suspected sea pirates.
According to a village source, the Naval officers stormed the village in search of remnants of arms and ammunition used in a failed kidnapping operation by the sea pirates on Thursday November 9th 2019.
Two foreign abductees of the operation have since regained freedom with one of the pirates apprehended and handed over to security operatives already, the source added.
However the naval officers have laid sustained siege on Gbagira village from Thursday day till now (Saturday afternoon) in search of the criminals, arms and ammunition left behind by the fleeing criminals.
A villager who pleaded anonymity said over the phone in pidgin told SUNSHINETRUTH that: “na fear we dey for here o, na Naval officers and some sea pirates dey exchange fire for our sea on Thursday. The two whitee wey dem kidnapped don dey free and the Baale (Village Head) don hand over them with one of the pirates weu dem catch to Marine Police.
But later na e the officers dem burst our village dey threaten people in search of the pirates and the guns wey dem use for the operation. Since Thursday we no fit do anything and people wey go sea no fit return to village. The thing tie wrapper for here o.”
This development has put the village and neighboring communities under great fear and tension while the waterways in and out of the communities are cordoned off, paralysing economic and social activities in the area.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Nigerian Navy proved abortive as at the time of filing in this report
