A Professor of Computer Engineering, Prof. Samuel Adebayo Daramola has advocated effective application of Biometrics-Computer systems to tackle high rate of insecurity in the country.

The don made the call yesterday while delivering the second Inaugural Lecture of Achievers University, Owo in Ondo State.

The theme of the lecture is: “SECURE NATION: APPLICATION OF BIOMETRICS-COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR EFFECTIVE HUMAN AUTHENTICATION”.

It was an event full of seventh heaven at Achievers University during the Inaugural lecture attended by academic scholars, friends and family members of Prof Daramola as well as friends of the Ivory tower that has emerged as one of the leading Private Universities in the country.

It was an academic event graced by Pro-Chancellor of the University, Hon. (Dr) Bode Ayorinde; the Institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Engr) Tunji Samuel Ibiyemi; the Acting Registrar, Rev. Canon Oladimeji and the Acting Librarian, Mrs D. C Ogbuiyi among top management staff.

Delivering the Second Inaugural Lecture, Prof Adebayo Daramola emphasized the use of Biometrics in all human endeavours to make society secure for all.

According to the renowned Computer Engineer, Biometrics is the latest technology of authenticating persons in a reliable and fast way.

“Today many nations have effectively applied this technology to resolve insecurity challenges ranging from document fraud to identity theft, terrorism and cybercrime.

“Biometrics is the technique of measuring human behavioral and physiological characteristics, the word ‘biometric’ is derived from two word: Bio (life) and metric (measurement).

“Biometrics authentication is highly secure and more reliable than non-biometrics methods of using password, identification (ID) card and personal identification number (Pin) because biometrics characteristics of an individual are not easily transferable,” the Don said.

Prof Daramola disclosed that his research work on signature verification started in year 2003 as his PhD thesis titled, “Development of robust offline and online signature verification system” under the supervision of a renowned biometric expert in person of Prof (Engr) T. S. Ibiyemi.

“The work was to proffer solutions to problems associated with earlier signature verification system.

“Without any iota of doubt, application of biometrics systems for authentication is increasing due to increase in crime rate.

“In recent years, the application of biometrics technologies has increased in many area such as citizen registration, identification card access control, passport, financial transaction, public services, and national security.

“Application of major biometric features such as fingerprint, face and signature, has widened from authenticating document to personal identification, work place access and device access,” Prof Daramola opined.

In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor of institution Engr. Prof Tunji Ibiyemi Samuel thanked God for the success of the inaugural lecture adding that the institution is proud of the Prof. Samuel Adebayo Daramola

Prof Ibiyemi said the purpose of the lecture is to introduce the new professor to the world, appraising Prof Samuel Adebayo Daramola as one who has given account of himself, for the purpose of consultancy, advancement in research, knowledge and making life better.
