A Pan-Yoruba socio/cultural organisation, the Defense for Yoruba People's Right (DYPR) has commended the operation of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) over its effort at reducing crime rate in the country.
The group also commended the efforts of the police for working diligently towards sustaining the prevailing peace that has prevailed within the south west region of the country in the last past few years.
The DYPR in a letter dated 28th of September 2020 and signed by its National President, Otunba Muyideen Opeyemi, directed to the Chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC) Mr. Musiliu Smith and copied to the Inspector General of Police, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja and the Commissioner of Police Federal SARS Abuja.
The group described peace as an important tools in the development of a state, however advocated the needs for a concerted efforts to be made between the security agencies and people living in various communities across the state in order to form a united font in the task of combating crimes in the country.
However commended the officials of the FSARS for discharging its official duties gallantly especially the recent arrest of the killer of late Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of the leader of Chief Reuben Fasoranti and kidnapping arcti ties within Ondo and Ekiti states.
"The letter read in part: " From the compassionate and committed heart they have faithfully discharge their duties overwhelmlly with unprecedented care, the Yoruba nation therefore on the authority of the Nigeria Police Service Commission to consider the team that worked for the the arrest of the culprits for immediate promotion without further delay"
"The DYPR believe in you and your capacity to use your good office for the promotion of these officers for the wonderful jobs they have done. It also worthy to note that in the course of discharging their duties effectively, some of the officers were tested positive to Covid-19 and isolated for days in line with the guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)"
The Yoruba group while describing the activities of the FSARS in Ondo state as commendable, noted that a synergy between the government, security agencies and the civilian populace was necessary in order to tackle the menace of reoccurrence criminal activities in the state and find solution to the security challenges currently facing the nation at large.
While making a case for a greater support from the governments and the Police Service Commission (PSC) for the promotion of the officers who participated in the a arrest of the killer of late Mrs. Olakunrin, the group opined that such support would help in complementing the efforts of the officials of the FSARS.
Explained that such support would further enable them to discharge of their duties effectively also stressed the need for them to carry out regular patrol and surveillance activities within the nooks and cringing of the state in order to check the activities of undesirable elements in the society.
While emphasizing the need to enhance the performance of the FSARS in accordance with current trends in more advanced countries especially on the issue of community policing, however urged law enforcement agents to be more civil in their activities while carrying out investigation.
He further advocated thorough investigation of crimes while suggesting that anyone found culpable in criminal activities should be promptly taken to court and ensure appropriate prosecution are sanctioned.
On the need for restoring what he described as the falling standard of culture, norms and values in the society which he attributed as being one of the factors responsible for the increase in crime rate in the cotemporary world.
Olamoyegun charged stakeholders which include the government, parents as well as those in charge of education to introduce measures through which such values which have been neglected can be restored back.
