The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig. Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim has tasked the corps members to focus on ensuring that Nigeria remains united.
The DG gave this charge in his Address delivered by the State Coordinator,NYSC Oyo State, Mrs.Grace Ogbuogebe at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin Oyo State, during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2021 Batch 'B' stream 2 corps members.
He stated that the National Youth Service Corps Scheme was established to promote national unity and integration which has been upheld since inception.He therefore enjoined them to make the objective a priority during their service year.
Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim who commended the corps members for their level of discipline and enthusiasm since their arrival on camp,also informed them that the Orientation Course is meant to prepare their physical and mental health for the assignment ahead of them.He equally charged them to respect the rules of engagement of the scheme
"We shall apply appropriate sanctions on recalcitrant corps members in line with the provision of the NYSC bye-laws " he warned.
General Shuaibu Ibrahim advised corps members to pay attention to the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development *SAED* Programme. He said the programme is meant to prepare corps members for self-employment and wealth creation through vocational and entrepreneurial training.
The DG stressed that Skill Acquisition is the only antidote to the high rate of unemployment facing Nigerian graduates.
He therefore urged the corps members to avail themselves of the opportunity, instead of joining the ranks of unemployed graduates scouting for the rarely available white collar jobs.
While urging the corps members to respect the culture and traditions of their host Communities,the DG emphasized the need for them to leave an indelible mark by ensuring they contribute maximally to their host Communities with the execution of projects that will add value to them.
He reminded the corps members that their assessment starts right at the Orientation Camp and it will continue throughout their service year, adding that they must be outstanding in their performance in all the Cardinal programmes of the scheme to qualify them for Honours Award.
General Shuaibu also commended the State Coordinator and other course officials for the smooth conduct of the camp activities so far and encouraged them to sustain the tempo of hard work and team spirit for the overall success of the Orientation Exercise.
The NYSC boss also used the forum to appreciate the Presidential Steering Committee and the Nigeria Center for Disease Control *NCDC* for their support and guidance towards safe and efficient conduct of the Orientation Course within the 'new normal'. He however called on all camp participants to adhere strictly to all the prevention protocols throughout the Orientation period.
Gen.Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to the Chief Judge of the State, who administered the Oath of Allegiance during the swearing-in ceremony. He thanked the State Government, Local Government Councils, Security Agencies, Traditional Rulers, Corps Employers, and other Stakeholders for their support especially in the areas of security and general welfare of corps members.
