It was an event filled with pomp and pageantry as the Nigeria Union of Campus Journalist (NUCJ), Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, (RUGIPO), Owo chapter celebrated her annual press week amidst joy and happiness with an inauguration of new executives for the council.
The press week with a lecture was held at Adekunle Ajasin Auditorium of the institution on Friday.
Speaking at the event on the theme: "Integration of Mass Media for Higher Institutions and National Development", the two guest Lecturers; The General Manager of Breez 91.9 FM, Akure, Chief Bashorun Banjo Abidogun (BBA) and his Crest 106.1 FM counterpart, Mr Adeolu Gboyega jointly noted that the advent of the new media can't be neglected, adding that is the most popular trend for the last few years and now considered as part of everyone’s life which is used daily.
"New media is an all encompass term used for various kinds of Electronic communications that are conceivable due to innovation in computer technology.
"The new media is comprise of websites, on-line video /audio Streams, emails, social platforms, online communities, blogs internet telephone, human computer interface and virtual worlds
"Like the conventional media, the new media have thier own advantages and disadvantages too, These too must be put in mind when deploring them for any use.
"The new media enhances businesses and Social interaction. More people /businesses get connected to each other more than before, Linkedin is connecting more qualified professionals with their dream jobs.
"In the area of politics, the media have Provided succor where there was hardship, People can now register on line instead of travelling long distances to the INEC Offices,
"Election results can now be transmitted electronically and faster tod. The covid-19 pandemic has now opened our eyes to the zoom or virtual meetings instead of physical gathering and its attendant risks
"E-libraries and books on line have made education very easily accessible. You can now stay indoor and read books available anywhere in the world, Courts now deploy zoom sittings instead of the hormal court sessions. Delivery of justice is getting faster and lessening frustrations.
"National development refers to the ability of a nation to improve the lives of its citizens. Measures cf improvement may be material, such as an increase in the gross domestic product, or social, such as literacy rates and availability of healthcare.
"The role of Media in the national development of any nation includes; providing information, education, entertainment, and social interaction and promoting the public good and also Signal when the people should act
"Information is very vital in the development of any nation. The people need to know what is going on around them and also need a feedback channel to the government.
"Higher institution must make the maximum use of old and new media to prepare their students for the challenges of being a total person when they go into the job market". They said
Speaking also at the epoch making event, , the Dean of Students Affairs in the institution, Dr. Henry Olu-Braimoh admonished the pen pushers to make accuracy and timeliness thier watchword in thier reportage.
He however warn students to shun all forms of exam malpractice.
"Any student caught transferring money to a lecturer in the examination hall will be seriously dealt with. He said
Highlight of the event includes inauguration of the newly elected Executives of the council and presentation of awards to some dignitaries among which are; Chief Basorun Banjo Abitogun with a Merit award as best Broadcasting Manager in Ondo State, Mr Adeolu Gboyega with a Merit award as the best exemplary leader in media space in Ondo State, Similoluwa Stephen with an award
'as the best newscaster/presenter of the year, through his love fascinating programme 'logba Ife' on Crest 106.1 FM, Eniola Olurankinse with an award of recognition as an Eloquent On Air Personality in Ondo State, Comfort Omolafe with a Merit award as an Erudite newscaster & presenter of the year, Gbenga Olubumoye with an award of media recognition as competent editor & presenter of the year.
Others Awardee includes; Adeboye Ado as the Most supportive press instructor of the year, Kayode Afolabi with a Merit award for service to humanity in news gathering and dissemination, David Fidelis with a Merit award for service to humanity in giving out in-depth, accurate and timely news reportage among others
