It was an event filled with pomp and pageantry in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital as Dominican University holds its Joint convocation ceremony in grandstyle.
The Joint convocation ceremony which is for 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 graduands of the university was held at the institution premises at Samonda, Ibadan
The event had lectures and speeches by key management of the school focusing on exploring and exploiting opportunities in the national and global economy
In a lecture entitled: "Let your education count" the convocation guest lecturer who is also the chairman, Globus Bank Limited, Peter Amangbo said Nigeria is currently washed by the menace of corruption, unemployment, moral decadence, crime and host other social and economic downward indices.
The guest lecturer who said rather than complaining of brain drain owing to the exodus of Nigerian professionals travelling abroad, emphasized the need for Nigeria to take advantage of the situation by investing in quality education and improving the quality as well as number of the nation's workforce.
While admonishing the students to be focused, passionate, continue in learning, maintain healthy relationship and think global, Amangbo said the graduands should brace up for opportunities and challenges while also utilizing their as a means to achieve their ends
Addressing the graduands, the chairman, board of trustees of Dominican University, Chief Anthony Idigbe took history of the institution to the decision of the Dominican Order to establish schools 800years ago, with the mandate of achieving human capital development.
The BOT Chairman who explained that the church had earlier survived government's attempt to completely take over education said despite the challenges in Nigeria, the institution is poised to raise quality graduates that would change the narrative no only in Nigeria but also in the world
Proprietor and Chancelor of Dominican University, Ibadan, Very Reverend Father Modestus Ngwu commended Emeritus Archbishop of Ibadan Catholic Diocese who is also the Dominican University pioneer Board of Trustees, His Grace, Archbishop Felix Alaba Job for efforts made towards realizing the Dominican University project
Reverend Father Ngwu who advised the students to uphold intangible values while aspiring to be wealthy gave assurance that the institution determined to move to Omotoso campus so as to expand its programmes.
In an interview, the Pro- Chancelor and Chairman, governing council, Dominican University, Ibadan, who is also the Presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi implored the students to be optimistic and uphold their aspiration adding that the institution would continue to keep track of their progress.
The Labour Party presidential candidate assured Nigerians of social economic stability if voted in as the president of Nigeria in the 2023 general election.
Earlier the Vice Chancelor, Dominican University, Professor Hyginus Ekwuazi stressed the need for government to consider Dominican university for grants in view of its involvement in man power development developing.
Speaking on behalf of the graduands, one of the first class honours graduates in the school, Mary Udenkwo appreciated the institution for building them professionally to add value to their fatherland.
She pledged the commitment of the graduating students to form team of great ambassadors of their alma mater.
Newsline NG however gathered that the Joint convocation ceremony in the 2020/2021 academic session had 47 graduands where 6 grauands bags first class honours, 22 in the second class upper division and 19 in the lower division while in 2021/2022 academic session, 7 graduands in first class category, 32 in second upper division and 9 in the second class lower division.
