The Coordinator NYSC Oyo State, Mr. Odoba Abel Oche has enjoined Corps members to embrace and project the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Nigerian society anywhere they find themselves.
Odoba made this call while declaring open the Inter-platoon Cultural Carnival for the 2023 Batch 'A' (Stream 1) Orientation Course, held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Iseyin, Oyo State.
He noted that one of the main objectives of the NYSC scheme is to create a bond of unity that binds together the diverse traditions and cultures in the enormous geographic entity called Nigeria.
While describing the rich cultural heritage of the different ethnic groups in Nigeria as “Determining our yesterday, today and future”, he charged the Corps members to internalize and proudly showcase it to the world. He also asked them to strive to preserve for the coming generations the beautiful cultures of Nigeria.
The State Coordinator further enjoined the Corps members to make good use of the opportunity created by the Scheme for young Nigerians to mix and associate together freely. He said their conduct at their places of Primary Assignment should show how much they have learnt during the orientation course.
"Maintain the discipline we have instilled in you and continue to showcase the good conduct you always display during our programmes in camp when you get to your Places of Primary Assignment" he said.
The Carnival and Cultural event witnessed exhilarating demonstration of different cultures and traditions cutting across Nigeria from Hausa, Efik, Igala, Igbo, Ijaw, Tiv, Fulani, Yoruba, Edo and Kalabari. The ten platoons made up of energetic and enthusiastic corps members tried to outshine one another in originality, creativity, choreography, coordination, costume, dance, orderliness and comportment in the cultural presentations.
It was indeed a spectacle to behold but as expected in every competition a winner must emerge. Platoon 8 who showcased Yoruba culture came first; Platoon 4 showcasing Igbo culture came second while number 9 platoon that exhibited Edo Culture came third.
The event that also marked the end of social activities of the orientation course featured presentation of prizes to different platoons that distinguished themselves in the dance and drama competitions held in the past weeks.
In the drama category, platoon 6 took the first position while the second and third positions went to platoon 7 and 4 respectively. Equally, in the dance category, 4 platoon emerged first, 10 platoon came second and platoon 9 went home with the third position.
Declaring the 2023 Batch ‘A’ (Stream 1) Carnival and Cultural Day closed, the State Coordinator had a group photograph with the various platoons congratulating them for a beautiful performance and charging them to maintain the attitude of excellence.
