The NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Kuburat Omowumi Bakare has told staff to harness the potential of corps members in order to boost food production.
Addressing staff on the outcome of the Annual Management Conference held early November,2024 in Jos, Plateau State, the State Coordinator informed the house that management has shifted its focus to food sufficiency for all Nigerians.
Bakare, who outlined the resolution of the meeting intimated staff on the need to shift focus from being core public servants to becoming producers of agricultural products.
She said that the management has entered into partnership with agricultural research institutes and financial institutions with a view to providing needed professional services and inputs to actualise the vision of the NYSC.
The NYSC Ondo State boss, therefore, charged members of staff, especially the field officers to come up with modalities that will assist them to engage corps members to achieve the mandate of the Scheme.
"We have the mandate of the management to step down what was discussed at the Annual Management Conference, and to let you know that it is mandatory for us to set the machinery in motion as we prepare for planting season early next year. The Director General has flagged off Tree Planting campaign and we must follow with planting of economic trees".
She continued, 'We are not going for economic trees alone but we are going massively into planting some of what we shall be consuming during orientation courses like tomatoes, vegetables, maize and yams in the interim while our long term production will focus on Palm trees and Cassava because we need to produce palm oil and garri for our consumption'.
She informed them that one time State Coordinator in one of South South states was applauded during the meeting for planting palm tree while he was in the saddle, and today, the State has enough palm oil for their orientation course programmes.
The Coordinator said that management through the Ventures Management Department has re-jigged the Pilot Farms in all the geopolitical zones and empowered them to lead in the mass production of staple foods which will in turn reduce over dependence on importation.
Other Assistant Directors who spoke at the meeting corroborated the State Coordinator and added that staff should continue to promote integrity and handle their assignments with high sense of utmost responsibility.
