A 39-year old man, Mr. Kofi Ajayi, has ended his seven-year old marriage with his wife, Opeyemi Popoola, after discovering through a DNA test that the two children he had been raising were not biologically his.
The matter, which came up at a Customary Court sitting in Igoba-Osi, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, caused a stir in the courtroom, following to the shocking revelations surrounding the case.
Ajayi told the court that his suspicion was triggered by widespread rumours in their neighbourhood, alleging that his wife was having an affair with her boss, who was later believed to be the father of the children.
“People said the children were not mine but hers and her boss’s. I didn’t believe it until a market woman said she saw them in a compromising position inside his car one night,” he told the court.
He further accused his wife of neglecting her duties at home, stating that she was always too busy with work and often became aggressive over trivial matters.
“She was always moody and took out her frustrations on me. I remained calm because I thought it was a phase most women go through,” he added.
Ajayi disclosed that following the DNA result, his wife pleaded for another test to be done in a different hospital. However, he rejected the proposal, insisting on the credibility of the result obtained from the family hospital where they usually ran medical tests.
He also revealed that throughout their marriage, he had observed strange phone calls and suspicious behaviour late at night but had chosen to ignore them in a bid to preserve peace in the home.
Responding to the allegations, Opeyemi admitted to having secured her job through sexual favours and confessed to maintaining a relationship with her boss in exchange for money and career benefits.
She confessed, “I couldn’t tell Kofi the truth about the pregnancy because my boss was a married man and I feared I would lose both the job and the child’s support if I opened up.”
In her ruling, the Presiding judge, Ireti Sunday, granted the dissolution of the marriage, stressing the importance of trust, openness and timely communication in marital relationships to prevent irreparable breakdowns.
The court’s judgement formally brought the union to an end, allowing both parties to part ways.
