Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has formally left the party and defected to the African Democratic Congress.
Obi announced the move on Tuesday at a political event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State, where supporters and party stakeholders gathered.
Addressing the audience at the event, Obi said, “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey.”
He added, “We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027.”
The defection marks a major boost for the ADC, which is positioning itself as a coalition platform ahead of the next general elections.
The National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark, was among prominent party leaders present at the event.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party and emerged as a strong force, particularly among young voters nationwide.
