The Secretary of the Oyo State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN ), Rev. Samuel Owolabi, has urged government to prioritise the security and welfare of citizens in the new year.
Owolabi, also the Presbyter, Methodist Church Nigeria, Wesley Cathedral Elekuro Ibadan made the remark on Sunday, in his new year message in Ibadan.
Owolabi remarked that the persistence of insecurity was a great concern.
He called for decisive actions to reduce terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.
The Oyo CAN Secretary urged governments to provide a clear plan for settling displaced communities and rebuilding infrastructure.
Quoting the biblical verse of Proverbs 11:14, he advised them to "always remember that leadership requires integrity, accountability and a commitment to serve.
The Cleric appreciated President Bola Tinubu- for allowing the US President's immediate rescue mission in tackling insecurity and called for more measures to stem the tide.
“I also appreciate Gov. Seyi Makinde for his vision and commitment towards the growth and peaceful coexistence of the people of Oyo State.
“We still however urge our government from the national to the grassroots to prioritise security, justice and welfare of citizens,” he said.
The cleric also enjoined Christians to arise and shine in the new year, according to the book of Isaiah 60:1.
“In these trying times, let’s stand firm in our faith, speaking truth with wisdom, promoting peace and resisting despair.
“Let’s be known for our love that heals divisions, hope that uplifts communities and faith expressed through selfless service,” he said
He commended the bishop of Methodist Diocese of Elekuro, Rt. Rev. David Adekoya, for his selfless service towards the growth of the diocese.
"To all the good people of Wesley Cathedral, Oyo State and Nigeria, welcome to the new year!
"May God's mercy, love and blessings fill our homes and hearts; may this year be a season of peace and prosperity for all Nigerians," Owolabi said. (NAN)
