The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has credited British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua's survival in a fatal auto crash to the mercy of God.
Adeboye made this statement during the church's monthly thanksgiving service, citing Joshua's accident as an example of divine preservation.
Joshua miraculously escaped death in the road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of two of his friends, Ayodele Kelvin and Gami Sina.
Explaining the significance of God's mercy, Adeboye said, "It is by the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed. We are alive because of the mercies of the Lord, not because of cleverness."
He referenced Joshua's decision to exchange seats with one of the deceased, saying, "The people he exchanged seats with died. I don't know why, but the mercy of God said someone would still be alive today."
Adeboye emphasized the personal nature of God's mercy, citing Psalm 89:1 and David's expression in Psalm 23:1, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want".
He urged the congregation to take the message personally, saying, "I want you to take this message personally. Maybe one or two people can join me in attaching meaning to it. I am talking to myself."
