OSOPADEC, AAUA Sign MoU to Complete Students' Hostel

The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) for the completion of the institution's long-abandoned on-campus students' hostel project.

The agreement, signed on Friday at OSOPADEC's headquarters in Oba-Ile, is aimed at expanding access to safe and affordable accommodation for students while strengthening investment partnerships between the Commission and the institution. 

The signing ceremony led by OSOPADEC Chairman, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, alongside members of the Commission's management, while the university delegation was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige.

Speaking at the event, Poroye reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to completing all inherited projects in line with the directive of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa against abandoned projects. 

He disclosed that the hostel project would be upgraded beyond its original design to include reliable electricity, modern toilet facilities, CCTV cameras, and mattresses to ensure a secured and comfortable living environment for students.

"We are committed to completing this project. Once this one is delivered, we will commence another. It is feasible and achievable," he said, while appreciating the university management for its cooperation and support.

Poroye also explained that although OSOPADEC's statutory mandate covers only Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas, the Commission is empowered by law to undertake projects outside its core mandate as investment ventures.

"Any project outside our mandate area is purely an investment. Such projects require formal agreements that clearly define how both parties will share the benefits and returns," he stated, adding that real estate development remains a key component of OSOPADEC's investment portfolio.


Earlier, AAUA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige, described inadequate student accommodation as one of the institution's most pressing challenges, noting that the university, with a population exceeding 25,000 students, currently accommodates less than one percent of its students on campus.

He said the completion of the hostel would significantly improve students' welfare and security amid growing concerns over off-campus accommodation.

"Today marks the formal commencement of this project, and I am delighted that it is happening during my tenure. One of my major visions has always been to bring more students into the campus. We sincerely appreciate OSOPADEC for this intervention," Professor Ige said.

The Vice-Chancellor also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for demonstrating strong commitment to the project through the provision of funds to revive the hostel, which had remained abandoned for several years.

The MoU is expected to fast-track the completion of the hostel project and further strengthen collaboration between OSOPADEC and tertiary institutions in delivering sustainable infrastructure through strategic investments

Court Strikes out Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy Declaration

A High court sitting in Okitipupa has nullified the Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy declaration, holding that the State Government had no power to create a new chieftaincy without the consent of the Rebuja of Osooro land, the prescribed authority over chieftaincy matters in the communities within Osooro land, including Iju-Odo Community.
