Truck Driver crushes WAEC student, Okada Rider to death

A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of a student participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and a commercial motorcyclist in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday evening along the Choba axis of the East-West Road when a truck reportedly lost control and crashed into a motorcycle conveying the student.

The deceased student, identified simply as Juliet, was said to be returning home after completing her examination papers at a secondary school in Emuoha Local Government Area when the accident happened.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the truck was travelling at high speed before suddenly veering off its lane and colliding with the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

One witness, who requested anonymity, said the impact of the crash resulted in the immediate death of both the student and the motorcyclist.

According to the source, adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall at the time of the incident, may have contributed to the accident.

“The truck was moving at a high speed and suddenly lost control before crashing into the motorcycle carrying the student. Sadly, both victims died from the impact,” the eyewitness stated.

The incident attracted residents and commuters who gathered at the scene in shock over the loss of lives.

Confirming the development on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the truck driver had been arrested and investigations had commenced.

She explained that the vehicle involved had been handed over to the appropriate authorities for technical inspection.

“Yes, I can confirm the accident. Two persons lost their lives while the driver has been arrested. The truck has been released to the Vehicle Inspection Office for examination, and investigations are ongoing,” she said.

Iringe-Koko further disclosed that the remains of the victims had been deposited at the mortuary of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

“The corpses have been taken to the UPTH morgue, while efforts continue to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident,” she added.

The incident has renewed concerns among residents over reckless driving and road safety along the busy East-West Road, particularly during periods of poor weather conditions.

A High court sitting in Okitipupa has nullified the Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy declaration, holding that the State Government had no power to create a new chieftaincy without the consent of the Rebuja of Osooro land, the prescribed authority over chieftaincy matters in the communities within Osooro land, including Iju-Odo Community.
