2026 Igogo Ekiti Day Will Surpass Previous Editions — Afolabi assures

The Chairman of the 2026 Igogo Ekiti Day Celebrations Committee, Dr Williams Mobolaji Afolabi, has assured indigenes and friends of Igogo Ekiti that preparations are in top gear to deliver a more colourful, impactful, and successful celebrations than those recorded in previous years.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders' meeting where the budgets of the various sub-committees were deliberated upon and approved, the former Permanent Secretary in Ekiti State disclosed that the committee had adopted innovative strategies and strengthened its operational framework to ensure a memorable outing that reflects the aspirations of the people.

Dr Afolabi stressed that no sacrifice is too great when it is directed towards the development and progress of one's community.

He noted that the time had come for every son and daughter of Igogo Ekiti to embrace a new mindset by viewing community development as a collective responsibility requiring the commitment and contributions of all, irrespective of the size of their donations or services.

According to him, the era when communities depended almost entirely on government intervention for development has passed, making it imperative for citizens to take ownership of projects that promote the welfare and advancement of their hometown.

While urging those who have remained indifferent to community development to reconsider their position, Dr Afolabi commended individuals and groups, who have consistently contributed their time, expertise, and resources towards the growth of Igogo Ekiti. He described their commitment as an enduring legacy that would be remembered by future generations.

"Those who have continued to devote their time and financial resources to the development of Igogo Ekiti are not labouring in vain. They are inscribing their names in gold in the annals of our community's history, and posterity will surely reward their sacrifices," he stressed.

To ensure a hitch-free celebration, Dr Afolabi advised all clubs, associations, and organisations intending to stage programmes during the festival to liaise promptly with the Central Planning Committee Secretary, Engr. Gbenga Afolayan, for proper scheduling and necessary guidance.

He explained that the measure had become necessary to ensure effective coordination and to prevent avoidable security breaches amid prevailing security challenges across the country.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the Finance Sub-Committee, Elder Babatunde Adesola, commended the leadership of Igogo Ekiti Development Association (IDA) for entrusting the planning of the celebration to the Dr Afolabi-led committee.

Given the plans on ground, he expressed confidence that the committee would sustain its impressive record of delivering successful annual celebrations.

In her remarks, the representative of Igogo Ekiti sons and daughters in the Diaspora, Mrs Ebun Kolawole, disclosed that intensive mobilisation and sensitisation efforts were underway to encourage greater participation by indigenes living abroad.

She expressed optimism that the 2026 edition would witness unprecedented involvement from the diaspora community, thereby further strengthening the bond between Igogo Ekiti and its global citizens.

Court Strikes out Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy Declaration

A High court sitting in Okitipupa has nullified the Oniju of Iju-Odo Chieftaincy declaration, holding that the State Government had no power to create a new chieftaincy without the consent of the Rebuja of Osooro land, the prescribed authority over chieftaincy matters in the communities within Osooro land, including Iju-Odo Community.
